Version one (green)
Version two (gold)
This is my entry for the make it float challenge. My thought behind this challenge was to draw the boat like they are in real life, like a scale model.
I started off way to ambitious, my first boat (green) had room for 120 2 euro coins, it immediately sank. It floats very well on its own , but it will only hold up to 20 2 euro coins (170) grams. The boat itself wheighs 70 grams. I drew a fancy top cover to cover the coins and to make it look like a real boat. Unfortunately, due to a lack of time (very busy studying and working) I didn't have the time to print it.
For the second prototype I took a better look at the huge freighter ships. The hull looks much more like the actual real life ships. It floats very well on its own, and this second version can hold up to 40 coins (340 grams). The boat itself wheighs 105 grams.
I can conclude that this was a significant progress , I was able to double the amount of weight it can carry, and it still looks like a regular real life size ship.
If I had more time I would have continued this process to optimize the ship and to make it carry as mucht as possible, while still looking like a real ship.
Both the hull files are printable on their own, I printed them with layer thickness 0.2. Version one took 5 hours and 39 minutes, version two took 6 hours and 27 minutes.
Due to a bad vertical shell slicer setting on the first boat, I had to seal the the hull with glue to make it watertight.
The second version looks a bit wrinkled on the back end, that's because of the overhang it had to print. It still is watertight though.
It was a total pleasure to work on this project, thank you Makerbot and Thingiverse for giving us the opportunity to be a part of this challenge!
