Summary

After being inspired by Cyberspace Man Mike's Hackers Pager Case, I wanted to try making something that fully resembled the original. His design is excellent and you really should go and pay him a visit however, I wanted something a little slimmer.

I found the original Advisor case by 0xRM and made a few tweaks to it so that it would house a Pwnagotchi. I changed the size of the bezel to suit a Waveshare 4, 2.13" screen and extended the backplate to increase the space for a battery. I also added a small hole for a USB C port and separated the buttons from the case. (I also added some icons to them, although they are a little deep).

Things you should know before printing:

I have 0 CAD experience, I remixed this using TinkerCAD so it is far from perfect, you will likely need to do a lot of post-processing, I'm unsure which of the pitfalls I had were solely to do with my printer so I will list them below.

  • I had to print this vertically, and even with supports the top of the case looks a little rough on the inside, I got around this by sanding it, the top in this instance refers to the area where the USB C port is.

  • The USB C port came out a little tight, I resolved this with light filing.

Bill Of Materials

  • Raspberry Pi Zero W 2
  • Waveshare 4 2.13" e-ink display
  • Magnetic charging cable and port - Amazon
  • 18650 Battery Holder and TC4056 Charging board - Amazon
  • 18650 Battery, I salvaged this from an old power bank but they are readily available
  • Green Acrylic - Salvaged from a candy box - [Amazon}(https://www.amazon.com/Interlocking-Skeleton-Candy-Coffin-Halloween/dp/B07PMTFHHM)
  • Consumables: double-sided tape, epoxy, gel nail polish, UV curer, double-sided adhesive pads (Optional)

The Build

I built the Pwnagotchi as standard, opting for the slimagotchi where the additional connectors are removed from the waveshare and the pins are cut shorter.

This is then laid into the case and secured with double-sided tape.

The battery holder is soldered to the TC4056 and the TC4056 is soldered to the 5v and GND pads on the back of the pi. We then epoxy the battery holder into the case.

The TC4056 is then fed partway into the USB C hole above the pi and the magnetic connector is clipped in to secure it.

I then used double sided adhesive pads stacked on top of the pi to stop it from moving and provide it with some security inside the case

Acrylic was then cut to size and sanded and pushed into the case.

The badge is the attached PNG printed onto slightly glossy sticker paper coated in clear gel nail polish and cured.

Finally print, paying and attach the buttons

Things I Would Change

As mentioned above, my CAD skills are lacking and their are certainly some things that I would change. The backplate of this design clips into the front of the case with small posts. This didn't seem like it would be secure without glue so I drilled through the unit and secured it with screws. Ideally, moving the screw posts further into he case would improve the visuals on the design.

Button icons, these are a little deep although you can drop paint into them and wipe away the excess.

There is no power button. I would like to eventually add a power button to the case, at the moment I'm having to take the back off and slot a piece of plastic between the battery terminals to cut the power when needed. This is not practical.

I used Fuzzy Skin in Cura for printing, I liked the idea but I think I went a little heavy on it, I would definitely change this next time, however after an abundance of failed prints I was just done with this as a project.

I hope to implement these changes into a second design once I have studied Fusion 360 and had a little break from anything resembling a pager.

Conclusion

I hope you enjoy this print, it caused me a lot of headaches to get right. Is it going to be the best case in the world? No. Can it be improved greatly? Yes, does it hold the Pwnagotchi safely and look cool? I think so.

I'm uploading this so hopefully like-minded people can improve on it and make it their own.
