Summary

I enjoy designing and making model buildings and functional items. They take many hours to design, test and refine. I share for free and NOT FOR OTHERS TO MAKE COMMERCIAL PROFIT. Please read my profile before downloading.
I sincerely hope others will enjoy my designs. I am always pleased to hear about successful or useful prints. Please post a photo of successful ‘makes’ if you can.

YARD CRANE mk2

This is an updated version. It's intended to be scenery for a model railway. I've printed it for my railway and the designs might be useful to others. Original version and photos at (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4749622).

The design is intended to be motorised so that the crane rotates. I used a geared motor purchased from Amazon. A mounting plate for the motor is built into the design. It requires two tiny M1.6 (1.6mm) screws to hold it in place. The motor has a 6mm shaft which fits either into the turntable or directly into the crane. (see photo).

The platform is compatible with my narrow gauge station at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4727163.

FILES:

  • CraneOnBase - The entire design on a 'wooden' platform base. This prints as one. No supports, raft or brim required. Motorisation not possible with this one.
  • HandCrane - A basic crane design. (I'm not so pleased with this one). 3mm drilling in base to accept motor shaft. Print with brim.
  • motorCrane - A slightly better crane. 3mm drilling in base to accept motor shaft. Print with brim. (5 tiny supports have been incorporated that will need snipping off)
  • Platform - A wooden style base for the crane. Includes drillings to mount motor.
  • StonePlatform - A larger 'stone' structure intended to be stone blocks with slate infill. Includes drillings for motor mount and turntable. (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4749622).
  • Crane Plinth Wood - As 'Stone Platform' but mirrored and with an upper surface to simulate wooden planks.

NOTES ON PRINTING
The platforms do not require supports, raft or brim.
The two cranes need a brim to improve adhesion.
I printed at 210 °C with a 0.2 resolution. The crane jibs, being diagonals, require a bit of smoothing off.

Any problems, please comment (politely) and I will attempt to modify. I sincerely hope other people will find these designs useful.

Please post successful makes.

DERIVATIVES:
Another Thingiverse member has remixed the larger base to use a servo to turn the crane. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4881677
