Summary

At what point does something stop being a "remix" and become its own thing? I don't know, but this design incorporates elements of thing 1636941, thing 1989704 and my own work added in 123Design and TinkerCAD.

Here are the links to the original items:

It is a remix? A mashup? I don't know, but I can't take sole credit for a design that is more other people's work than my own.

With that said, there are a ton of filament holders for the Monoprice MP Select Mini 3D printer, and none of them met my expectations. Some were close, some were only for "mini" rolls, some just didn't work well.

This holder is about the same size as the stock filament holder and uses the factory mount. This filament holder uses ball bearings so the filament rolls out freely, has guides to keep the spool in place and is even branded with the Monoprice IIIP logo. When it's mounted on the printer, it looks like it came with it.

I printed this with Simplify3D due to its excellent supports. In my opinion Simplfy3D creates the best supports and they come off cleanly. For me, Cura always left behind a mess that was hard to clean up. Keep this in mind when choosing a slicer for this piece.

You will need 2 x 608zz ball bearings for this to work. (It works as well as stock without them, but I strongly suggest the ball bearings.

Edit: At the behest of a friend I tried something. Much to my surprise, these 3D printed bearing shapes actually work quite well, not anywhere near as well as a real bearing, but surprisingly well:

There are 4 files, they are:

  1. MP_mini_BB_spool_holder.V1.0.stl - The original - somewhat narrow - only works with some spools.

  2. Flipped_MP_mini_BB_spool_holder.V1.0.stl - The original - flipped upside down for fewer supports.

  3. MP_mini_BB_spool_holder_20mm_extended.stl - modified version with 20mm extra space for larger spools

  4. MP_mini_BB_spool_holder_25mm_extended.V2.0.stl - Version 2.0 with 25mm extra space, but overall length shortened to 120mm so it will print on the stock mini bed. See the images for a Cura screenshot that shows how to align it for printing.

Note: If you're confused about which one to print, try #4. Sorry about all the different versions, however I'm trying to help people out with their specific needs.
