Me too, in fact, I'm really bad at it.
So much so that I found a solution, use REAL trees for armatures. I have shared this file as a preview for a Kickstarter to be released on December 1st. The Kickstarter will include several more trees in an attempt to help the community.

The Kickstarter will offer a couple of different options to help in the creation of realistic tree armatures, like a photo reference library (photos of 360 around the trees), rough models for you to tweak yourself, and fully printable models.
