The file 'Minifigure Display 3D Printer Model' is (stl, scad) file type, size is 527.6KB.

Summary

Slide these hexagons together to build a unique and creative display for your... interlocking block ;) minifigures.

Each cell is designed to contain one minifig, with it's 4x3 base. The tolerances are fairly tight, so print slowly and with care.

If you do a remix, do yourself a favor and make the inner dimension 62 mm instead of 60. Don't make the same mistake I did.

Update (08/27/21):

I've gone and made things complicated...

Since the customizer never works, I've decided to create the most sensible models as downloads. I've tried to capture the most popular options. These should all be compatible with the old models, so fear not! (The old models are still there with a "classic" prefix on the file.)

Here is how you decide which one you want. The key is in the file name:

(Type)_(Socket Type)_(Back Type)_(Fit).stl

  • Type is the style of hex. You have the normal "Hex", the double hex, a new half-height hex (for placing on the top), and a new prototype hex that gives about 0.5 mm of extra headroom. This extra headroom seems sufficient to house the giraffe man or crayon person! It's not an ideal solution, but you can make it work. (Or have the minifig seated in a regular hex.)
  • Socket Type determines if the hex has the recessed spot for the 4x3 baseplate. If you want to put something other than a minifig in there (or anything without a baseplate), go with NoSocket.
  • Back Type determines if there is no back, a full back, or a full back with a keyhole mount hole.
  • Fit is how tightly the hexes fit together. I've had good luck with tight, but if that gives you problems, go with loose. (All of the "classic" hexes are loose.)

So, if you wanted the base hex, with a recess for the baseplate, an open back, and a tight fit, you'd choose Hex_Socket_NoBack_Tight.stl.

I've made slight quality-of-life and aesthetic improvements also, but these are very minor.

Update (08/18/21):

I just noticed that the base hex was missing the little studs for the base plate. I've updated to a version that has the studs. Sorry folks.

Update (07/19/21):

I added a special "double" hex for extra tall minifigures. Please provide feedback if you try it! (Thank you schnabbo!)

Update (05/10/19):

I added a couple of veneer pieces for smoothing your edges. I haven't tested these, so give them a try and let me know.

Update (03/21/19):

Try the Customizer! It rarely works, but it's worth a shot!

The customizer should allow you to change the size of the hexagon or type of connectors. Beware that you must be consistent with the rail and slot locations! Also, once you choose a size, stick with it -- different sizes are not compatible with each other.

Let me know if it is really broken.

Update (03/20/19):

I've made some fixes to the design (thanks to Senri and naymo for pointing it out!) that should help if you've experienced rails that don't connect to the hexagon. The new design is fully compatible with the old model.

I also eliminated the standard fit design and now all of the models are of the "loose fit" type. Again, this should have no impact on compatibility. (I've come to really hate those rails and slots. I wish I had gone with something different -- like a nice dovetail.)

Update (02/03/19):

If you are struggling with fitting these together, try the new "loose fit" version. I haven't tested it, but it should make it a little easier to slide the hexagons together. They're backward compatible with the original version.

I also added versions without the baseplate cutout, for anyone who wants to make larger or smaller versions or who want to use this for any other purpose.
