This adapter will mount a point and shoot compact camera to the eye piece tube of a microscope. It is designed for a tube 33mm (1.31”) diameter by 60mm (2.30”) long. With the eye piece installed, it will just slip over the tube. Screws on the side can be used to adjust for smaller tubes. A ¼ -20x3/4” screw is used to hold the camera to the adapter. The holes on the side can be tapped for 10-32 or ¼-20 screws. The PLA plastic was soft enough that it was possible to just drive the screws without tapping holes first .
Compared to a phone camera, the compact camera may give higher resolution and more control over zoom and exposure. The cameras come in various sizes so the adapter is slotted to allow sideways adjustment. It may be necessary to put a washer under the camera to adjust the height. The camera must be zoomed in until the image fills the screen.
The sample was printed on an Ultimaker original, 30% fill, with support, runtime 6 hours, material cost $2.50.
