Summary

This is very much a work in progress - you can print it and it should work out fine - just a few things need to be tweaked to make things easier (see below). Also - the 2 pieces shown in the pictures are not the actual length - those were shorter sections I did to make it easier to test things as I went along.

This is an LED light tower that has been made so you can control how tall the tower is by printing out more lengths of tower:

  • Long is for 300mm or larger bed sizes
  • Short is for 220mm bed size

I downloaded an LED tower and found that it was basically just a simple "U" with a base - the LED lights had to be stuck on the side of the "U" channel - wasn't what I wanted so my design has two channels - one for the light strip and one for a diffuser (printed in white). There is a base, tower, and tower top pieces all with male/female connectors. You can print as many of the "tower" pieces as you want to vary the height.

I started with a design that glued together, but then tried really hard to make the parts snap together. I strengthen the connection by offsetting the diffuser so it runs a little into the piece below it. I then printed a "sleeve" to strengthen the connection more, which is useful if making the tower taller.

I designed the base to be able to be used with an existing LED light controller (vs an arduino or the like), and added cylindrical holes that fit pennies so you can weight the base (again if you make the tower taller this will help).

The tower and tower top need support - but only touching build plate - it is a VERY small amount of support.

Things I know I need to fix:

  • The diffuser needs to be able to go down a little further into the base - right now it will be like 4mm too long - either adjust one piece before printing or I used the clipper that came with the printer to trim it off
  • Assembly is a little tricky - want to play with that and try to make it easier (NOTE that the Diffuser is a trapezoid and definitely has a front and a back).
  • Want to add something to hold the sleeve in place better - honestly the sleeve was an afterthought printed quickly to help tall towers and to make it easier for my daughter to transfer it to her college apt without breaking it :)
  • Want to make an alternate base designed for an arduino or other controller
