Summary

This time, I'd like to introduce the "manta ray" 3D puzzle, created using a laser cutter and MDF material. This piece, inspired by the shape of a manta ray, features a simple yet dynamic design, making it a unique and captivating presence in any space.

Materials and Tools

The puzzle was crafted using 2.5mm thick MDF (medium-density fiberboard), cut with a laser cutter. MDF is an ideal material for creating puzzles and 3D structures as it is easy to work with and cuts cleanly with a laser.

I used a Etcher Laser Pro for this project. Its high precision made it easy to cut even the more complex design elements.

Design and Production Process

The manta ray design began as a 3D model, which was then transformed into a 2D slices. This method simplifies complex shapes into easily assembled parts, making the assembly process smooth and intuitive. The puzzle uses a slot-assembly system, so no glue is required, allowing the pieces to fit together like a puzzle.

Once the design was finalized, I converted it into a digital file compatible with the laser cutter, which then cut out the MDF pieces. By manually assembling the cut pieces, I brought the manta's sleek, grid-like form to life.

Finished Product

The completed "Manta ray," as shown in the image, boasts elegant curves and a beautiful lattice structure. The use of thick MDF ensures that the puzzle is sturdy and can double as a decorative piece or display object.

For Those Who Want to Try

This project is accessible even for beginners with a laser cutter and is perfect for anyone looking to create their own custom puzzle or art piece. Feel free to give it a try!
