We're always on the look out for family friendly maker activities that don't require a lot of initial instructions and can be cheaply and easily reproduced. We found the original project by Colleen Bikini to be perfect. We tweaked the files after our initial run of robots so that it would work better with the 5mm LEDs that we keep on hand.
And then last summer we decided LED fireworks pins would make the perfect 4th of July maker activity and used the base setup and designed fireworks around it. It proved a huge hit with more than 50 adults and dropping in and making pins about half an hour.
The Fireworks are also built for a 5mm LED.
