Summary

A cup holder for an Ikea Poang Chair

There are already some cup holders for the Poang Chair on Thingiverse. However, I wanted something that mounted more securely, but also didn't require other hardware (like nuts and bolts) to hold it in place. I also didn't want it scratching the wood or sliding around loosely on the chair's arm. To accomplish that, I made a two-part design that snaps together. Also, I over-sized it a bit where is goes around the chair arm, so you can put a 70 x 160 mm wrap of bicycle inner-tube underneath it. That protects the wood and minimizes movement. (The inner tube I used was was about 0.75 mm thick, and my Poang chairs have a wood cross section of approx 62 mm x 22 mm, so I designed around that.)

The cup holder is large enough for a couple of my wife's favorite cups (very important), as well as most standard dining cups. It also holds a standard beverage can or bottle. There are two slots for the cup handle, so you can mount it on the right or left side of the chair.

To install, wrap the inner tube over the top of the chair arm and put the main cup holder over the top of it. Then from the underside, push the 90 deg hooked end of the locking piece in to the main part, and rotate up and snap it into place.

Be forewarned...

It stays on pretty well. To remove, get a medium flat head screwdriver and put it behind the middle latch of the locking part (see photo). Pop it out of it's groove, and down. Then pull up on the cup (so the outer latches release), and the parts will separate. Just be careful, as you don't want to scratch your chair. Maybe practice putting it together and taking it apart while not on the chair.
