I needed to modify an Ikea METOD kitchen cabinet, and wanted to use the standard Ikea style fixation, witch is a strong fixation for my usage. The issue for this fixation is that they need precise drilled hole alignement. So I designed drill guide that let me align these with a precision way below mm precision.
The guides are quite quick to print if you use .35 layers, and are made to be disposable after several usage, being easily damaged by the drill process.
You will need Ikea screws and 3 drills, a 5 mm drill, a 8 mm drill and a flat 15 mm drill.
There are 3 guides, calibrated to position the holes for Ikea standard 19 mm plank .
The process is described by the pictures.
Step 1:
- Position the plancks and mark the position of the holes with a pencil..
Step 2:
- Align and position guide-5 on the main plank, using the slit to perfectly align with the pencil mark.
- Use a scotch tape to mark the maximum depth on the 5 mm drill
- Use a clamp to fix the guide 5
- Drill a 5 mm hole, watch the scotch tape on the drill to ensure not to drill too deep.
Step 3:
- Align and position the guide-15 on the second plank, using the lit to perfectly align with the pencil mark.
- Use a scotch tape to mark the maximum depth of the 15 mm drill
- Use a clamp to fix the guide 15
- Drill a 15 mm hole, watch the scotch tape on the drill to ensure not to drill too deep.
Step 4:
- Align and position the guide 8 on the second plank, using the slit to perfectly align with the pencil mark.
- Use a clamp to fix the guide 8
- Drill a 8 mm hole up to the 15 mm hole
Step 5:
Step 6:
- Admire the result and open a beer to be happy :)
