Summary

I modified an awesome holiday lights globe from cozymandias that used flat pixels in order to use traditional round pixels.
These hold 49 bulbs. But a standard string has 50 bulbs so, you attach one bulb on the top to use as a stem. These are great pumpkins at Halloween and giant ornaments at Christmas.

Included are 3 build options.
All of the build options require 2 x "pole_with_tie_notch" for the top and bottom.

Option 1: Print 7 x "Vertical_Spacer_Step_Final" and 49 x "Xmas Ball Bracket Adapter v3".

  • The adapter fits into the slot where the flat pixel should have sat.
  • Pros: Super easy assembly. You can use as much force as needed to seat the bulb into the adapter then the adapter and the bulb attach with a single zip tie.
  • Cons: Extremely time consuming to print the adapters. Printing this showed off the fact that my print bed does not heat evenly so we had lots of failed prints. We also struggled with printing such tiny pieces and had to print them with a wide border to keep them from coming up from the plate.

Option 2: Print just 7 x "Vertical_Spacer_Step_Revision1" pieces.

  • Pros: Cuts the print time dramatically over option 1 and uses much less filament with no failed prints.
  • Cons: Need to be careful inserting the bulbs and might have to grind some edges if any of them aren't quite perfect.

Option 3: Print just 7 x "Vertical_Spacer_Step_Revision2" pieces.

  • Pros: Better aesthetic in my opinion than revision 1. This simply alternates the bulbs on each side of the pole. It also was less time consuming than option 1 and had less print failures.
  • Cons: Lots of supports required as it doesn't sit flush on the bed. Because of this, it takes much longer to print than option 2 but less time than option 1.
