Update: Added a 92mm fan version with improved airflow channels. Should prevent hdds from overheating
I designed a 6 bay hotswap hdd cage for my small form factor, high efficiency server.
It works really well and uses an very cheap Backplane from an old Supermicro Server which works with generic sata and molex connectors found in every pc. No special adapters or cables necessary!
I bought my backplane on ebay for about 10$. It mounts vertically in my Inter-Tech IM-1 Pocket case. Can be adapted to mount in any case with the attached Fusion 360 file.
Modelname of backplane: Supermicro Backplane BPN-SAS-823T
Server parts
Processor: Intel Core i3-9100 LGA 1151, 3.60 GHz, 4 -Core
Mainboard: Kontron Fujitsu D3644-B C246 Micro-ATX
ECC RAM: DDR4 32GB (yes working ecc on a intel i3)
Case: Inter-Tech IM-1 Pocket
Power supply: PicoPsu150 + Leicke NT03015 12V 120W
This pc idles with about 5W with hdds spindown. Thats about as low as you can get with a self built server. I use it for smart home automation and jellyfin media server.
