Summary

Developed in the 1930s, this beauty was able to fly over 450 km/h (280 mph) powered by a 700 hp nine-cylinder, air-cooled, radial engine. So essentially the Z40 was a big fat engine with little wings. That makes it looks like a comic version of a plane and it was probably pretty tricky to fly.

This small-scale simplified realization pays tribute to the chubby look of the original. The build was done on a desktop cnc-machine by Stepcraft from 6.5 mm beech plywood using a spiral-toothed 1.2 mm flute. Glued together and nicely sanded it's a great toy for boys (of different age).
A laser cutter might be a good alternative tool to create smaller versions.
