Summary

After my Saitek Pedals failed several times and higher quality pedals were way too expensive for my taste, i've decided to design my own set of rudder pedals.

If you want to build your own Flight Sim Pedals, make sure to read the provided BOM and Instructions.pdf beforehand.

The whole system is built with basic parts: 2020 extrusions, 608ZZ ballbearings, M4, M5, and M8 screws.
The only non-standard parts are the torsion springs for the toebrakes, but you can easily make your own springs if you have a vise and pliers.

The re-centering mechanism consists of RC-Car Shockabsorbers pushing a ballbearing on a linear slider against a cam-surface, the behaviour of the pedals can be adjusted by using stronger springs, changing the spring preload, using a thicker oil for the shockabsorbers or use a different style of cam.

There are 3 Hall-Effect sensors, one for the yaw-axis, and one for each toebrake-axis, they are connected to an ATmega32u4 based Arduino Pro Micro, after the calibration process, all calibration values are stored directly to the EEPROM.

The Fusion360 files are included, feel free to modify the parts for your needs:
-Pedals final v12.f3d: the whole assembly
-Pedal Slider v1.f3d: the slider just as a seperate file for easier tweaking
-Pedals old version.f3d: first attempt

My first attempt was a design with a re-centering mechanism similar to the MFG Crosswind Pedals, a spring-loaded lever pushes a bearing against the cam surface.
This system, however, had a few downsides:

  • the bearing moves on a circular path, which results in an assymetric behaviour.
  • the printed lever was too weak and flexible.
  • without shockabsorbers the pedals were too springy.

The Version with the linear slider works much better, but maybe someone will find a use for the old version.

edit 19.06.20: added Pedals final v13.step

edit 02.10.20: added "slider_28mm_modified.stl" and "sensor_holder_28mm_modified.stl", allows the use of bigger shock-absorbers
