Summary

Edit 4/15/2020: Versions C and D have been updated with increased clearance for the dowels and the ends are now chamfered to allow for easier insertion of the dowels. The information page has also been updated.

This is a simple wall shelf for filament spools designed to save storage space. The advantages of this design over running a single rod through all spools allow the user to remove any individual spool without having to take other spools off first. The printed mounts are minimally designed to support the dowels while not interfering with the spool organisation.

Version C is the most rigid and stable design while Version D is designed to be able to be printed on machines with a smaller build volume or to use less material. Material tags have also been included to label each shelf according to the materials stored.

Instructions

For each shelf print:
  • 2x Filament Shelf Version C
    OR
  • 2x Filament Shelf Version D
Other materials:
  • 2x 1" wooden dowels (read below regarding choosing lengths)
  • 4x #10 screws at 1"-1.5" length
Assembly:

In order to properly support the weight of filament, ensure the printed brackets are mounted to the wall studs and not just drywall. We use 36" in dowels with with printed brackets 32 in apart, spanning three studs with 16" spacing.

  1. Locate the studs and mark locations where the printed brackets will be mounted
  2. Use a level held up to the markings to ensure the shelf will be horizontal and not slanted
  3. Install each bracket one at a time with the screws
  4. Slide the dowels through from the ends
  5. Place spools on top of the dowels or printed mounts
