Summary

I once fancied myself the unrealized designer of a popular eyewear line. I'm no longer entertaining that fantasy. So why keep all the fun locked away?

I designed and cut prototypes of these sometime between 2005 and 2008. It's all kind of a blur now. My prototypes were 6-sided machined (3-axis, multi-setup) from block polycarbonate and worked great, before destructive testing. Your mileage from low-res FDM may vary...

They double-fold into a pretty compact little package.

The hinges are designed to eject rather than fail when hyper-extended. The joints are positionally biased and function quite well when accurately rendered in a material with sufficient hardness and elasticity. Fingers crossed for ABS-like resin. No screws or additional hardware, just four unique frame components and the lenses.

I >think< they fit a cut down of the old (1999) Oakley Straight Jacket lenses, which appear to still be available. (hello Revant, I just learned we're neighbors!) If not, it's a similar (likely 8-base) profile. The lens fitment is pretty forgiving and works as intended in the prototype.

The sculpt is a fairly narrow (vertically) lens shape and a bit angry looking. But that's fairly malleable stuff if people are really having fun with this, so try and think of it as stylistically flexible, and maybe we can have a big open-source collaborative double-folding wrap sunglasses for everyone party!

There's kind of a mess of two versions of a fairly primitive surface mesh that didn't completely translate into NX from Pro-E or possibly even Rhino,... So it will take a little effort to get something volute and print ready. To that end, I would like to see some expression of demand, otherwise I'm not going to waste my time. Maybe just a comment, as asking for likes on an unprintable post seems a little unreasonable. I think it would be pretty cool if this became a starting point for something more sophisticated,... I have ideas!

I don't know how far the disclaimer here needs to go,... But I'm definitely not selling medical devices (eyewear) here. It's (free) ART! And if you use these to poke your eye out or choke your sister, I obviously had no part in that nonsense. Huff your resin fumes and point lasers in your eyes at your own risk, ye litigious maggots!
