Summary

The ESP 01 (ESP 8266 based) is a very nice tiny WiFi-enabled board, it's extreamly useful, especially if you upload new firmware into it.

However, it is not solderless-breadboard friendly and requires connecting and disconnecting wires to switch between normal and flash modes.

So, I designed this little box that does all this for you, one side conencts to 3.3V power, the other to your PC using a serial adapter and in the middle you plug your ESP 01 board, the design is based on my previous ESP 01 Connector

This box features a switch to select normal or falsh mode, a reset button and a little bump on top that doesn't let you plug in your ESP module up side down.

Parts:

  • A toggle switch (I used "New original 10pcs 3-Pin SPDT ON-ON Toggle Switch 6A 125VAC" from AliExpress)
  • A push button, 6x6x3mm size

The switch fits into the round hole on one side, the push button sits it the small cradle on the other side, see picture with wiring instractions.

Note that:

  1. You may need to connect the switch diffrently depending on the model of your spacific switch (the wires need to be connected in flash mode and disconnected in run mode)
  2. The TX/RX labels match the ones on the ESP, you need to connect RX on the box to TX on your serial adaptor and vice versa
