Summary

--- What is there not to love with a 3D printed, two-color Easter Egg filled with candy? ---

Designed in Autodesk Inventor Professional 2016 and printed in PLA on a Lulzbot TAZ 5 with the dual extruder head V.2.

The glow-in-the-dark version is a big hit (see the photo).

A single-color version is also available for those that haven't taken the step to a dual head yet.

NOTE: The is a bit tricky to print, so please read the notes before starting.

  • Candy not included. :-)

IMPORTANT NOTES (read this before you print)!

  • SCALE/SIZE: Make the top just a touch larger and the two halves will fit very nicely, the original CAD drawing had zero tolerance. I made the top 0.3 % larger than the bottom, and that worked well. NOTE: The G-code files are already scaled to fit perfectly together! The G-code files generate an egg that is about 85 mm in diameter, and perfect for a reasonable amount of candy.

  • SPEED: Slower speed is advised for the lower part of the bottom, and the upper part of the top. It will print at full speed, but you may get some deformations due to inadequate cooling. The G-code files has a speed of 50 mm/s. I manually turned it down to 60 % when needed for better print quality.

  • WIPE AND PRIME TOWER: If you use a wipe & prime tower when you print two colors, you either have to make a really big tower (like with a 1/2" / 15 mm side) or you have to use a brim. An alternative would be secure the tower with clay, hot glue or similar. Without a brim or other foundation, the wipe tower may fall over. I used a 10 line brim and that seemed to work fine. If you are unsure about the bed adhesion, it is good to also secure it with a piece of tape even if you use a brim.

  • SPOOL HOLDERS: The original Lulzbot spool holders and feeding tubes can sometimes have quite high friction, particularly when the spools are full. Too high friction will lead to filament grinding, which will result in a ruined print. We designed the spool holders that you can see in the photos just to print this Easter Egg. You can download them here from http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1424791 user Killacycle's Thingiverse page.

  • COOLING: 100 % cooling fan speed gives a better print.
