Welcome to the long and forgotten history of the Shivering Sands Earth Force Space Naval Fort. Commissioned in mid 2150’s. Designed to be a multi functional platform arranged along multiple hard to observe Solar System Planet’s and solar body blind spots. The small Stations would be the first to pilot the idea of Solar System sighting, defense and resupply depots through out the System.
I’ve taken inspiration from the World War 2 British Sea / Army Forts constructed outside territorial waters. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shivering_Sands_Army_Fort Feel tree to read this fascinating story that lives true today as these stations are modeled to resemble the roles and designs of these fortresses, as well as tell a similarly Babylon 5, pre Hyperspace story’s and, tied together some soon to be tied up loose ends.
Commissioned in 2140, the project would be completed in 2150, with Lt. Commander Osiris Evan’s Commanding. Named Shivering Sands by its locations on the outskirts of Neptune, the coldest planet in the System. Its primary role was to secure the Solar System from Alien visitation as Earth was underway constructing its own Navy. Shivering Sands would see a career life of shooting down scout vessels and visiting observer ships from other species from time to time and maintain contact with the Ares Class Battleships, Orion Class Monitors and Tender Vessels as well as studying the planetary bodies local to its position.
Evan’s met his match with making first contact with the Centauri; a Day that introduced Hyperspace Travel to humanity, and was able to diplomatically shake the hands of the new Species. As this was a first step for Humanity beyond the System; Need for the maintenance of the Stations would fall less of a priority as Humanity quickly started to cooperate with the Centauri and create newer Ships, such as the Nova Dreadnought’s, Hyperion Cruisers, etc. Cost was also a factor of the Stations abandonment and subsequent movement into the shipping lanes outside of the boarders of Earth Force Controlled Space. As technology improved, and the Stations being obsolete. They were converted to sub space transmitters and receivers to help boost communications. They were moved outside the solar system due to budget slashing maintenance left most stations in disrepair and became hazards to navigation.
During the Dilgar war, some more Stations were also lost from attack of the Dilgar. Earth Force deemed these Stations to no longer be a priority to upkeep in any capacity after that conflict. With the advancement of the Data Crystal, these Stations that did survive were not carried over to modern blue print or placed on Star Charts and most would drift from their locations anyways.
After the Earth Minbari War, the “Home Gaurd” Anti Alien movement found Shivering Sands, and occupied the Station, refurbishing it with the help of the Raiders. Intent on utilizing left over or missed communications and gunnery areas to broadcast messages to supporters of the xenophobic anti-alien movement. For supplies and staying out of the attention of Earth Force, these now pirated Stations would participate in transmitting encoded messages. It’s speculated that Shivering Sands participated in the destruction of Babylon 3 by the assault of E.A.S.-Astraea. However the Station was never found. Resupplied by criminal acquisition of Cargo transports and distribution of supplies helped maintain the renegade Stations future to the present day. Where, the best misinformation is neatly pleaded into social media of civilians further complicating ISN’s coverage of the success of the entire project.
I listed this station today because I’ve wanted to do this for a while, however the story line did not offer a better pathway that was parallel enough to do the real Sea Forts justice till now.
