Summary

This is my take at fixing the infamous digital caliper fast battery depletion syndrome: Turn off your digital caliper after some measurements, store it away, then need it a few month later and discover that the battery is already depleted. Turns out the ON/OFF switch only turns the screen OFF and cheap calipers are bad at saving power.

The fix consists in a battery case that holds the LR44 battery and can be screwed over the original battery slot, routing the (+) contact through a physical switch.

Project constraints and goals

  • An actual switch that really turns off the caliper
  • As unobstrusive as possible when using the caliper
  • No modification to the caliper itself due to its metal body
  • Easy battery access without needing a screwdriver
  • Use the same LR44 battery the caliper comes with

Parts needed

  • A switch - Front plate size: 20x6mm (or adjust the model to your own)
  • A tiny bit of hot glue for sticking the switch in its slot
  • Magnet wire - 0.3mm (0.5mm should also work)
  • Solder for making the contact pads
