Summary

I needed some better organization for all my stuff used often or just occasionally for 3D printing and Arduino making. As soon as I saw the DeWalt TSTAK double drawers I knew those were for me and I was lucky enough to run across latifimr's organizers for these drawers. I printed a coupe of them out but was unhappy with the longer print times because of the nice thick walls he made his out with. Those are great if like him you use this for heavier items like deck screws or garage stuff but I was only going to have lighter weight stuff. I started by just taking his original designs and made the walls .6mm thick but that was to thin so I found a happy middle ground with .8mm walls for most everything. Then IK started thinking it would be awesome if I could make some more custom versions for specific functions and began redesigning a specific new box for each of the 9 slots in the drawer.

For all my drawers I removed the factory dividers and just used these boxes. When you look at each drawer they are basically a 3 x 3 grid with a total of 9 slots. I labelled mine as such:

1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9

Slots 1 & 3, 4 & 6 and 7 & 9 are the same just reversed. Slots 2, 5 and 8 are all unique. While there is some ability to exchange a couple around they don't fit well because of how some slots have chamfered edges where to factory tabs slotted into.

After making the basic layout that fit well in each of the 9 slots I began thinking it would be nice to have a couple of them have trays in the slots that contained cutouts for certain tools. The first one began by joining slots 6 & 9 together in a bigger box then building the tray insert to fit in it. That tray is fully removable to review additional storage underneath. Net came the idea to make an insert for another frequently used tool my 6" / 150mm digital caliper. This posed a couple new hurdles since it was larger than 2 slots so using the same method I made one single large box that covered slots 2, 5 & 8 and made a removeable tray for the caliper to fit in there as well (of course with more storage underneath). This triple slot was right at the limit of my printers size without doing funky things and lots of supports (my largest printer is 270x200x200). Knowing that even myself less than a year ago didn't have a printer this large I took the large single box and split it in 2. With that one slots 2 & 5 are still together but now 8 is a separate print to achieve essentially the same thing.

After I started filling my 4 drawers with these working prototypes I noticed some of my tools we're just a little to long so I used the 6 & 9 platform from earlier and raised the floor of it so that it has a smooth bottom. This will result in a little longer prints but I was able to get away with infill of 10% so it went fairly quick. See the problem is these doubles and triples have chamfered or reliefs cutout of the bottoms to give clearance for the factory guides in the bottom of each drawer.

Everything should be working good and hopefully be free of errors but if you find them please let me know and I'll fix them. Also if you want a little different layout more or less dividers in a slot box give me a shout and help out best I can. Now if you want your own custom tool inserts too that's gonna be a little harder but we might be able to work something ;)
