Summary

Over the past year, a lot of my classes have been online meaning I spend a lot of time at home working from my desk. I found that I’m more productive and have better mental health when my environment is clean and organized. I looked at some of the other desk organizers on Thingiverse and found a lot with features I liked but weren’t 100% what I needed. In the end, I decided to design my own organizer.

I printed everything in TTYT3D’s silky rainbow PLA filament: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VJ2RHKF?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

This organizer contains a pencil cup, calculator holder, trinket tray, post-it note tray, notepad/flashcard holder, eraser box, and a set of drawers.

The calculator holder was made for a TI-84 Plus CE but it will work with smaller calculators too (such as a TI-36X Pro).

The pencil cup has two small sections in the back. I designed one to hold my scissors and the other to hold my calipers along with a few 6in rulers (you can never have too many rulers).

The note tray holds post-it notes along with a small spiral notebook and a few flashcards.

Lastly, the eraser box holds a standard art eraser. I designed it with hooks on the back so it could be hooked on the rim of the pencil box however when I printed it at a .28 layer height the supports failed and the hooks didn’t print out. I decided not to reprint it as I’m using color-changing filament and had to print it with a few other pieces as it is too small to produce the rainbow effect on its own. In the end, I stuck it onto the pencil cup using some removable double-sided tape. The hooks may print if printed at a .2 or .12 layer though I have not tested this. I uploaded a version without hooks if you wish to use the same settings I did, simply glue it in place after it prints.

After everything was printed, I used removable double-sided tape to stick everything together and added rubber feet to prevent it from sliding. This is not necessary to do as you can arrange it how you like but the pencil cup is top-heavy when everything is in it, so I suggest anchoring it down.

Color-changing filaments are slow to change and TTYT3D’s rainbow filament only changes at about every 20m or so depending on where it is in its cycle. I found it best to print several pieces together to maximize the rainbow effect.
