I redesigned the end of the Katana hilt to be able to hold two 18650 lithium batteries. They have a much higher capacity than AA, AAA, or 3V batteries and can be easily recharged. The additional weight also helps balance the katana better.
Using two batteries means ~8V will be output so you need to add a buck converter to step it down to 5V for powering the D1 mini board and LED strip. Here is the one I used:
