Summary

This is a Commodore 1701 Monitor "mini" replica.

This replica is recreated at 53% scale, to accompany Retro Games Limited's THEC64 Mini (which is a 50% sized replica of the Commodore 64). Together they make a nostalgic set, and, like the C64 Mini, this monitor is designed to be a working monitor, and useable with the C64 Mini or any other video source you like.

The Commodore 1701 monitor was a color monitor produced by Commodore in 1986. At the time it was one of the sharpest and best quality monitors to use with 8bit machines & consoles. It is still a very desirable piece of beloved retro tech to this day!

This mini-monitor design was modeled in 3DSMax for 3D printing to use with an 8 inch LCD Monitor 4:3 IPS (1024x768) Screen, and incorporates inputs for HDMI, VGA, AV, BNC Built-in Speakers, USB slot (for media player), and running on a 12V Power Adapter

All of these inputs are usable from the monitor's back input panel, designed into match the original look of the 1701 rear, while supporting the full input functionality through extender cables back connecting to the the LCD's onboard inputs.

Parts designed to use with this 3D printed case, plus instructions to build it are listed below, and also in the "1701_Mini_Monitor_Instructions.pdf" (Part of the download files)

🛠️ Aug 2024 Update:

  • Added a new 2nd variant screen bezel model that squares off the bezel corners. This model is called 1701_Monitor_FrontBlackSquaredBezel.stl, and it allows a much more complete visibility of the 8" LCD screen's corners, for users who need to see imagery in the overcan areas of the screen.

  • With the original 1701 monitor's curved corner bezels, this wasn't such an issue as in the 8-bit home computing days, text in the overscan areas of the screen were always avoided (i.e. the C64's light blue border). But for those using this with modern PC's or Raspberry Pi's etc which use the full screen, this squared bezel model is recommended

🛠️ Sept 2024 Update:

  • Some people have enquired about the fact that build video shows differing shots of the CTRL mounts featuring oval and rectangular shaped buttons. What's with that?

  • Well, Suffice to say I've built a number of these - iterating and improving the design over some months, and some of the 8" monitors I bought, had oval shaped buttons and some had rectangular buttons, and so some footage of both styles have ended up in the final edit of this video. The finished design I uploaded to thingiverse was a rectanguar button design, but since I have the control panel stl file for the oval one too,I've uploaded that stl file also, so you can use whichever part matches the button shape your monitor came with.
