Summary

Long ago, I upgraded the head unit in my 09 Silverado to an aftermarket unit that included an external Microphone for hands-free bluetooth calling. I was always annoyed that these manufactures could never figure out how to use the OEM mic hidden in the overhead console to help get a better "stealth" install.

Recently, I upgraded the head unit again to an Eonon Android-based one because I wanted Apply CarPlay. But it too required installation of an ugly external mic. This time, I wanted to get that fully stealth setup.

First, I tried using the OEM mic by cutting the oem plug off and soldering on a generic plug. This worked but the sound quality stunk (a common complaint with them by many GM/Chevy owners). Part of the problem could be that if you look inside it, the mic hardware is sitting sideways. Seems kind of dumb. And who know the quality of the mic they used.

After comparing the sound quality of the aftermarket mic, I decided it was the one to use. I fabricated this part to clip into the OEM location but having the mic down fire right into the cabin. This required extracting the actual mic hardware from the plastic housing mount which was simple. Once I did that, I was able to get measurements for the mic itself - about 10mm.

Note that I have uploaded both the "cut" version with a 10.5mm hole for my mic and an "uncut" version that is solid so you can edit or simply drill out for you mic if it is a different size.

With this, the sound quality is significantly better.
