Cheapo Fume Hood / Ventilated Box
NOTE: This is NOT a real fume hood and only provides minimal ventilation. It should NOT be used with anything hazardous to your health.
I wanted a cheap ventilation system so I could stain and seal some things I printed with Hatchbox Wood PLA. It isn't very powerful, but it provides enough negative pressure inside the box to contain the smell and help the stain/seal to dry.
There are 4 purchased parts:
Assembly
- Pry the metal stand off the fan so just the fan and circular frame remains.
- Place the printed "Fan Front" part on the front of the fan and the "Fan Back" on the back of the fan. I attached these two parts to each other using string through the three attachment points on each, but there is probably a better way to hold them together.
- Attach the vent duct to the "Fan Back" and "Port" parts. The duct stretches over the ridge on each part and is secured in place with zip ties included in the vinyl duct kit.
- Trace the opening of the "Port" part onto the top of the small cardboard box and cut it out. The wedges on the part should go through the hole in the box to hold it in place.
- Use the large cardboard box to cut out a cardboard insert for the window, then cut a hole in it just barely big enough for the "Fan Front" part to fit through and stay in place.
- Enjoy!
