Cell Phone/Desk Phone - Hybrid
The idea for this design came to me a few months ago. I work for a company that ditched their PBX phones long ago. They have gone completely mobile leaving me sorely missing my traditional desk phone. So I devised a clever concept to merge my mobile phone with all of the comforts of full desktop phone.
No need for complex Bluetooth this design takes advantage of the phones 3.5mm jack. Makes a great charging base and phone stand which, is also light and portable. Perfect for quick trips to the meeting room and an amazing tool for a dynamic office environment.
The base was designed around my office issued IPhone SE and 2 interchangeable front covers were designed to accommodate this phone with both a case and without (different placement of cable ends). The front cover snaps into the base and around the power/earphone jacks. A cutout on face is used for quick pry removal and a large slot is cut in the back to allow cables to pass through quickly.
The stand and handset rest are fit using a peg and hole system which also extends slightly into the base. This design can be used with or without glue and has the added benefit of an ambidextrous handset placement.
The handset was designed around parts scrapped from…you may have guessed it…. an old Office Phone Handset including, Mic/Speaker, and RJ9 jacks. There is a small box in the back of the MIC rest that houses a RJ9 jack allowing this design to be modular. Plug in any RJ9 headset (or even your favorite handset) and you get the same result.
The wiring was a simple idea and took advantage of the 4 pin 3.5mm headphone jack and a set of ear pods that came with the phone. The issue I ran into with the ear pod wiring was not being able to solder the cloth cored wiring in the 3.5mm cable. I ended up having to carefully expose the 3.5mm jack, remove the original wiring and solder new wires directly. Out of the 4 pins only Mic, Left and Ground (is used for both mic/speaker - ). I considered engineering a hook switch for the headset (Can be accomplished by grounding one of the 3.5mm connections) but decided upon using the phones touchscreen for all controls.
This is my first multi-part Assembly in Fusion and I am delighted that I stuck with the design process over the last few months. This design as it is not only cool looking but very functional as well. It is my pleasure to share this concept with the Thingiverse.com community.
Enjoy!
