Out of the box, it works with AA batteries, or with 2 LP-E5 batteries.
I am not satisfied with the capacity and quality of LP-E5 batteries available to me. Therefore, I make an adapter for more common Li-ion 18650 batteries :)

(physically a pair of lifepo4 22650 is placed into the grip, but the camera only works with them when fully charged, and at a charge of 80 percent, the electronics of the camera turn off the power, without a boost converter this scheme does not make sense)

Printed, tried, and rejected (white on the photo)

I made this adapter before acquiring a 3D printer, from polymer clay and old parts.
In principle, it turned out to be quite comfortable and worked for about 2 years, but clay is not very good material for something durable :)

I redrawn and printed a model of white PETG, nozzle 0.4, layer 0.15.

Pros:

  • I have a battery with a fair capacity of 3.7ah,
    which is about 3,500 shots at 500D - this is really two times more than 2 batteries from canon, and they are practically not discharged during long-term storage.
  • Easy to replace batteries.

cons:

  • with sharp shocks, batteries may lose contact due to this, the camera may start to behave strangely, it is treated only by taking out the battery for 2-3 minutes...
  • the printed opening mechanism works quite tightly, in gloves it is difficult to open
  • the small elements hard to print :( redone several times and print with nozzle 0.2 and a layer of 0.1 mm, if you have more experience with the printer this may not be a problem :)
  • I use only contacts plus and minus, the camera defines the adapter as batteries, without increasing the flash charging speed as with two original batteries

2 New version

Printed of a shock durable blue HIPS, take into account the threaded rod it does not make much sense, but I did it !!

Pros:

  • survives falling from the table without expanding the batteries :)
  • were corrected deficiencies with the contact from the first version
  • Now in the scheme are quite strong springs, nuts and m3 stud for durability, while this is also the main disadvantage :)

  • In the future, I plan to glue the case tightly, but have not yet decided on a balancing scheme and method of charging. Perhaps the body will change a little.

cons:

  • M3 nuts must be unscrewed to charge the batteries in a separate device, but given their capacity, this happens 1-2 times a month
  • I used ready-made caps for the supplied adapters, so now I have only two batteries,
  • Old adapter too :)
    +/- I have not tested the compatibility of the cover from the first version with the flange from the second, the fasteners may not match.
