Summary

Modifications to my original design, different enough that I thought it might merit a remix. The big change is it is now centered, surrounding the front bed leveling screw. Thanks to Nathan Bachman (http://www.thingiverse.com/Nbachman/about) for all his input on the original design, much of which is integrated into this design.

Design features

  • Camera is now centered on the print bed, so don't have to angle the camera to accomplish this.
  • Camera is held higher so it will clear the top of the frame but still give a good angle on the print.
  • Camera is held in place by the front bed leveling screw so is more secure.
  • Still has provision for tapping an M5 thread into the bottom as an extra set screw
  • The camera will now clear the front door if you have one, but by a VERY small margin.
  • Camera also clears the print head, but a slightly larger but still VERY small margin. Almost no room for movement in either direction!

Design Limitations

  • This design assumes that you have a nut driver (I have http://a.co/8H6qbOT) to turn the M3 nut on the bed leveling screw - a combination wrench of pliers wouldn't be able to get to the nut with this design. Thumb screws also wouldn't work unless they had an offset.
  • The camera is now square with the print head, which means that if you use the printer lights, you'll get quite a bit of direct reflection in the first 20-30mm of printing. Could probably print something which screws onto the print head and reduces that.
  • No included threads - I have a tap and die set and like the results of cut threads vs. modeled threads. Probably not too hard to download the right threads from the Nut Job customizer and integrate into the design, but I haven't done that.

Various notes

Disabling auto-focus in OctoPrint

If you use OctoPrint, the autofocus on the C910 can be really annoying as the moving print head confuses it. To disable the autofocus and set it to what for me is the middle of the print bed:

  • sudo apt install uvcdynctrl
  • add the following lines to your /etc/rc.local before the exit 0 at the bottom:
    uvcdynctrl -s "Focus, Auto" 0
    uvcdynctrl -s 'Focus (absolute)' 122
Yes, I know /etc/rc.local is old school and sloppy, but it works.
