Summary

Wire cutting jig for measuring and cutting wire

I needed to cut some short lengths of wire as accurately as possible for making a wifi antenna. This jig was an experiment to aid the accuracy.

Note: the jig is deliberately designed to cut too short - you need to calibrate it. See below.

Small differences exist in every setup caused by different print accuracy and how flush to the jig you can cut with your wire cutters.

Calibration Procedure

  • ensure the caliper is at zero with the jaws closed
  • insert the jigs tightly to the jaws and set the caliper to some arbitrary length eg 30mm
  • insert wire and cut to the chosen length
  • measure the cut length and subtract from set length to get the error value.
  • set the caliper to the error value and zero the caliper. If using a non-digital caliper, use the computed error to adjust the length of cuts.

It's not perfectly accurate because of variation in getting the cutters flush to the jig. Also, with soft copper wire, the cutters tend to pinch the end to a 'v' shape, so it's not square. But I was able to cut lengths that were within about 0.1mm which seems quite good.
