Summary

Remix of Mag-net's awesome Calcifer model. This version lights up with a flickering flame effect. You can toggle the lights on and off by clicking down on Calcifer.

Let me know if you're interesting in making this or using any of its parts and I'll post the PCB schematic/layout, and some more detailed instructions on how to put it all together.

Models:

  • Calcifer_Only_Remix: added a hollow path inside him for the LED lights and a little tube to his bottom that slides into the hole on the case lid, making contact with a little nubbin on top of the toggle button on the PCB. I also carved out a little mouth for him since I just could not get this to look right using paints.
  • Pan: Same as original model, just pulled it out so it can be printed separately.
  • Pan_Handle: Same as original model, just pulled it out so it can be printed separately.
  • Wood_Only: Same as original model.
  • Case and Case_Lid: housing for the electronics. Sits inside the cauldron.
  • Coin_Cell_Holder: holds 3 coincells. I used a couple of metal tabs from some old AA holders I had lying around to solder them to the PCB.
  • Nubbin: Just a little thing that rests on top of the toggle button to allow Calcifer to make contact with it. Each pair of LED wires is routed through one corner of the nubbin.

Electronics:

  • Dual astable multivibrator. This makes the 4 LEDs flicker in a sort-of random looking pattern. I made the PCB by carving it out of copper-clad board using a cheap 3018 CNC router. (Yes, that's a bodge wire :D got my switch poles mixed up!)

Painting:

  • Pan: white plastic primer spray, Rust-Oleum Aged Iron textured spray, clear gloss coasting.
  • Wood: white plastic primer spray, hand-painted using acrylic, clear matt coating
  • Calcifer: hand-painted eyes using acrylic, clear gloss coating.
  • Case/Lid: painted black using acrylic, matt coating.

Printing notes:

  • The infill density and pattern you use for Calcifer is important here since he is lit up from the inside and this will determine how the light defuses through him. I found an infill of 15% / Archimedian Chords looks best.

  • Printed Calcifer, wood and cauldron with supports. Had to use a supports blocker to prevent supports from being generated inside the hollow tube in Calcifer (see Calcifer_Only_Remix_SupportsBlocker)
