Summary

This is a simplified model of the C-47 airplane. The model is divided into several parts that fit onto my Makerbot Replicator Dual build plate. The wingspan is approximately 80 cm. The total take off weight of my model is around 500 g (including a 3s lipo with a weight of 75 g). If possible try to keep the weight even lower. It is also important to print the tail as light as possible in order to get the center of gravity closer to the leading edge of the wing.

  • DYS 1306, 3100 kV motors (2x)
  • DYS 10A ESC (2x)
  • Servo Hextronik HXT500 (4x)
  • Receiver
  • LiPo 3S

A few tips for printing:

  • I printed almost all parts with a single shell and around 5% infill to give them some stability.
  • To print the wing tips a support element is included in the files that helps keep the wing tips upright.
  • The ailerons should be printed like this this /, to minimize weight.
  • The rudder and the elevators should be printed with their longest direction aligned with the Z-axis. This helps minimize weight.

Update 1 (february 4 2019)

  • As suggested by Japin, I modified the tail section of the plane to move the elevator and rudder servos further to the front. This should greatly improve the ability to set the center of gravity at the correct location. Therefore I uploaded a new tail model "FuselageTail_wo_Servos.stl", a new servo holder "ServoHolderCenter.stl" that can be placed somewhere within the fuselage and a new lid "FuselageMiddleLid_wo_interference.stl".
  • According to an estimation based on eCalc (www.ecalc.ch) the center of gravity of the plane should be located somewhere between 46 and 50 mm from the leading edge of the main wing.
