The file 'Butterfly (Voronoi, Scalable, Multilayer) 3D Printer Model' is (scad, stl) file type, size is 1.2 MB.

Summary

I wanted to have a butterfly that can be printed in multiple sizes and has both sides in a dual color look.

It's not really easy to print, but you don't have to glue anything. The wing's infill is only 0.4 mm thin and lets the sun shine through otherwise opaque PLA.

As all source code is contained as OpenSCAD, you can customize the wing's pattern if you like - but it's rather fiddly ;)

About the pictures:

  • the pink one is PLA. I had to increase the printing temperature to make this unicorn poo stick to the outer walls
  • the red/yellow one is my first print with (transparent) PETG. I have some stringing problems - maybe it's because I just guessed the right printing temperature. The slicer wasn't optimally configured and caused some ugly gaps.

ToDo:

  • I still have to find the right settings for Cura to get better results (especially with PETG)
  • The wall-thickness isn't exactly what I had calculated in OpenSCAD. Maybe a bug due to excessively abusing the CSG-functions to improvise missing features ;)
