Breville suggest using a butter knife to remove the filter basket but you would have to get in between the portafilter and basket a bit at a time and also risk scratching the pieces.
This tool just slips on from the front and sits in the indentations on the portafilter and you should just be able to pull up and the basket will come with the tool
