Tension caps are simple mods to repair the loss of consistent filament flow, caused by the compression of the extrusion spring. Over time the spring flattens, reducing the pressure on the filament, this causes inconsistent output and weaker prints.
Print the 2mm or the 3mm cap. Inserted beneath the spring, the spring is compressed a bit, restoring the extruder's grip on the filament. Should the spring flatten out further over time, replacing the screw beneath the spring with a longer screw will allow you to modulate the cap height further, as the cap sits atop the screw.
If this method becomes ineffective, just replace the spring. Good luck and happy printing!
