The intended design was for paperback books, where the book corners would get messed up when carried in a back pack / purse / suitcase. The holes / loops were originally sized for 550 cord. The cord would wrap around the book and through the corner protectors to hold them in place. A stretchy or bungie cord material could be utilized, however it was perceived that if the bungie cord material was laced too tight then it would end up bending the book.
