The file 'Avengers To TAGINN Airsoft 40mm Barrel (Remix) 3D Printer Model' is (STL) file type, size is 889.5KB.
Remix of the Explosive Enterprises Avengers TAGINN barrel.
This version has had the internal shelf removed and a 9.1° taper cut in, to better match the 9° taper on Taginn rounds. This should also help lock in printed Taginn rounds. I've also put a chamfer on the thread lead-in to stop prints from failing at the end.
The barrel prints muzzle-down on the bed with no supports, and should be a much easier print than the original model.
Print in PETG with gentle cooling to prevent shrinking, or use ASA/ABS for the best results. Do not use PLA or Polycarbonate, as they do not have the fatigue resistance required to hold up to launch pressures.
When installing the barrel, use a plastic-safe threadlocker like Loctite 425, Vibra-Tite 325, or Permatex 19920. Superglue (Cyanoacrylate) also works fine, it just doesn't hold as well. Tighten to finger-tight only.
Update 12/19/2023:
Testing with Green Gas worked great, but CO2 blew the printed barrel apart and threw it out of the end of the launcher. Whoops!
To fix this, the barrel has been redesigned to better accommodate the base of a Taginn shell, as well as thicken the threaded section from ~1.4mm to over 4mm. Overhangs are still <45 degrees to make printing a breeze. The shell has been shortened accordingly to better replicate the OAL of the real Taginn launch shells.
Update between 12/19 and 12/29:
4mm thickness wasn't enough to hold up to CO2. V3 of the barrel increases thickness to 5mm, which has been holding up fine.
Update 12/29/2023:
Barrels made of ASA are holding up perfectly, but Polycarbonate is coming apart thanks to the shock loading all that expanding CO2 gas is providing. Don't print these in PC. ASA or ABS would be ideal, or even PETG. I also noticed that the Explosive Enterprises model doesn't let the threaded section bottom out in the gas head adapter, which allows the clockwise rifling to turn the barrel against it's threads, tearing it off. V4 of the barrel model has extended this section to 7.6mm (from 6mm) to stop this from happening. I've also changed the thread lead-in chamfer to a radius, so that it seats into the bottom of the gas head better.
Update 05/14/2024:
Model updated to completely redraw the rifling. Proper measurement shows the rifling to be a 380mm helix (380mm per revolution). This should significantly improve fit with real Taginn ammo. This is now version 6.
Update 05/15/2024:
Updated barrel to v7, further adjustments to the rifling dimensions.
Update 05/17/2024:
Updated barrel to v8, found a happy stopping point to settle on for the barrel & rifling dimensions.
