This heat pipe is designed to be fixed without modifying the router and removable, for vertical router mounting for example.
Materials needed:
-I used an 80mm X 15mm 5V USB fan (supplied with grill).
-A USB controller to control the fan speed
-Four small zip tie, the same ones supplied with the PC cases for cable management.
-Four M3 screw for the fan.
The story behind:
This is a heat pipe for adding an 80mm fan to an Asus RT-AC88U router.
I designed this part because I already had a heating problem on my first router and one of the networks (2.4Ghz) has not worked since.
In the middle of a heatwave, the router heated up very quickly during a moderate load (downloading a wow update in fiber network on nvme disk) which damaged one of the Broadcoms which manages the wireless.
In the futur:
I will probably update the files to include small clips.
I chosse the orientation of the fan in extract mode to dodge pushing dust into the router.
Resultats:
Speak for themself ^^
IDLE without fan:
2.4GHZ =>42°
5GHZ => 47°
CPU >74°
IDLE with fan 15minutes after:
2.4GHZ =>35°
5GHZ => 41°
CPU >53°
I set the fan to the minimum speed for testing.
The final assembly with the fan adds approximately 5.5cm of height to the router.
