How to generate plotter gcode

One possibility is to import vector image to Fusion360, extrude it one layer and slice it using your preffered slicer. This method is not suitable for more complicated graphics tho.

What I use is Inkscape with gcodeplot extension. This lets you generate gcode right from your vector graphics really fast.

  1. If you don't have Inkscape installed, install it from here: https://inkscape.org/release/
  2. Install this Inkscape extension. Download the .zip file from here: https://github.com/arpruss/gcodeplot/releases and extract the contents to your Inkscape installation, into the extensions folder.
  3. Prepare your vector graphics. After you're done, do save as. Select 3-axsis gcode plotter data type, name your file and save.
  4. New window with gcode options appears. Set work z-coordinate according to your z height in position when pen touches the paper you draw on. Set lower y-coordinate to 35 or higher - this is to account for pen offset from the nozzle. Make sure parking z-height is higher than work z-coord. You can leave all the other values default, or fiddle with them as you wish. Click ok
  5. G-code is generated. Now open your gcode and delete line 10: G28 Z ;home, so your pen doesn't crash into the printer bed while homing Z axis. Save the gcode file.
  6. Now you're ready to print your code!
