For this Flying Extruder implementation I didn't use the classic sandows or spring way. In this setup the extruder is lifted with rectractables strings from a set of badge/key holders.

A batch of badge holders like the ones I used for my setup was about 10 € the box of 4. I decided to use 6 badges to lift my extruder because DDG extruder + pancake Nema 17 stepper motor is pretty heavy. With lighter extruder and motor you could probably use 3 or even just 2 badge holders.

Also note that my Flying Extruder design can work with any Kossel or Delta 3D printer. The trick with the badge holder can be used in even more setups and probably with differents types of 3D printer.

How to build it?

• Download and print the 2 parts
• Assemble the printed parts with 2 M3 screws with washers and 2 square nuts.
• Remove the plastic part that holds the preasure button (cut it) from the badge holders.
• Attach each badge holder's ring to an hole in the top plate part.
• Attach the BMG/DDG extruder and the motor to the motor bracket and secure it with the 3 included M3 HEX screws.
• Attach the badge holders to the frame of the printer. I used Velcro scratch cable ties to accomilsh that. You can use any cable tie really.

Benefits

Flying extruder with short bowden tube has better extrusion / retractaction and can extrude rubber like materials like TPU.

This reduce the weight on the head and the results I objeserved are :

• There is less are none ghosting effect when using the badge holders to lift the extruder compared to the same extruder attachesd to the printers X, Y and Z carriages with sandows.
• The head stay in place even when the stepper motors are disabled. The head will not fall down because of the extra weight of the extruder and it's motor.
