NOTE: This carriage was designed around the original E3D Titan Extruder and v6 hotend. It may not work well with Chinese clones.
The power of the E3D Titan Extruder and the v6 hotend, packed in one powerful direct extruder setup. Remixed out of various different things, this carriage lets you mount this awesome combo directly on your Anet A8 or AM8 printer. Along with this, it comes with an optional X cable chain.
Pros
- Designed for the Anet A8 and AM8 printer.
- Used to mount the powerful E3D Titan Extruder and v6 hotend.
- Open air design for maximum airflow and improved cooling performance of the heatsink.
- Compatible with most NEMA17-like motors up to 40 mm in length.
- Optional X cable chain, for those who want to use one.
Cons
- Due to the nozzle's offset, slight decrease in printing volume. 10mm decrease in X and 25mm decrease in Y. Can be mitigated if you have an AM8, as you can simply move the Z assembly and the hotbed around.
- If the chain is used, a decrease in printing height. Around 40mm decrease in Z. This was required to prevent chain from catching onto the filament and Titan Extruder.
Required Components
- 1x E3D Titan Extruder
- 1x E3D v6 HotEnd
- 1x X Belt Holder (for Anet a8 - 2017) - This carriage does not come with an X belt holder, so a 3rd party one is required. It probably works with any, but I admit I haven't tested any other design.
- 1x NEMA17 compatible motor - The stock one works well, but you may use any up to 40 mm in length.
- 4x 25mm long, 3 mm wide screw for cutting wood - These are needed to mount the bracket onto the carriage. You can see the required screws on photo 6 of this upload in the bottom right corner.
- 2x M3 nut - For mounting the blower fan assembly.
- 2x M3x10 screw, button head - For mounting the blower fan assembly.
- 3x M4x12 screw, button head - Required if you plan mounting the X chain.
- Everything else can be used from the stock printer, including some of the needed screws, bearings, blower fan, motor, etc.
Suggested Extra Parts
Parts To Print:
- 1x Carriage.stl - The main baseplate on which all other carriage parts are mounted.
- 1x Bracket.stl - Bracket for holding the Titan Extruder and the motor.
- 1x Fan.stl - Part which holds the blower fan in place.
- 1x Z_Endstop.stl - The nozzle will be a lot higher than on stock, so a lowered Z endstop is required.
Optional Parts If You Want To Use The X Chain:
- 1x Chain_Carriage.stl - Part which holds the carriage side of the chain.
- 1x Chain_Motor.stl - Part which holds the X motor side of the chain.
- 18x Chain_Link_Short.stl - Short chain links.
- 2x Chain_Link_Long.stl - Long chain links.
- 20x Chain_Clamp_Short.stl - Clamps to hold the cables in chain. For short links.
- 4x Chain_Clamp_Long.stl - Clamps to hold the cables in chain. For long links.
Printing Instructions
- Print all parts without supports except for Bracket.stl and Chain_Motor.stl. These two parts do need supports.
- Print all parts exactly as already oriented to maximize quality, strength and ease of printing.
- Use 40% infill for all parts except for the Carriage.stl. You may print this part lower, for instance, 20%.
- Print all parts at 0.2mm layer height.
Assembly Instructions
- Print all required parts. Don't forget to print yourself a 3rd party X belt holder. I suggest this one.
- Remove the stock carriage or whatever you have mounted on there.
- Install the Carriage.stl onto the bearing blocks. Note that the bottom bearing uses only 3 screws unlike the stock. If you are installing just the carriage without the chain, use 11x M4x8 screws from the stock printer. If you are installing the chain, use 8x M4x8 screws to screw in the carriage and place the Chain_Carriage.stl on top. Use 3x M4x12 screws to secure this part. Check photo 7 of this upload to see how this should look like.
- Connect the Carriage.stl with the X belt holder on the back. You can use stock screws for this.
- Install 2x M3 nuts into the Bracket.stl. Use a single screw to force the nuts into their holes. This is meant to be a tight fit so they don't fall out. Refer to photo 8 on this upload.
- Use Bracket.stl to mount and install the Titan Extruder along with the v6 hotend and a motor. Use the official guide for this. NOTE: The hotend should face towards the right, so that once you mount the bracket, it faces downwards.
- Use 4x 25mm long, 3 mm wide screws for cutting wood to mount the Bracket.stl onto the Carriage.stl. These screws are intended to go hard, you may need to use some force to finish this step. The bracket needs to feel completely solid and as if part of the carriage.
- Mount the Fan.stl on the Bracket.stl using 2x M3x10 screws. Photo 9 of this upload shows an overview of how these three parts should be connected.
- Mount the blower fan.
Extra Instructions For Chain
- Mount the Chain_Motor.stl onto the X motor assembly. Use three screws already there to mount it.
- Assemble the whole chain. Sand all of the links (both short and long) thoroughly. You don't want any considerable force when trying to move the chain. The chain should be assembled as follows: Motor -> 2x Long Links -> 18x Short Links -> Carriage.
- Place cables into the chain. Make sure that the cables have space to breathe, otherwise the chain may damage your cables.
- Insert the clamps into the links. Use 2 longer and 1 shorter clamp per 1 longer link, and 1 shorter clamp per 1 shorter link.
- Secure the cables on both the extruder side and the motor side with a ziptie.
I hope you enjoy this carriage, and if you have any questions or found some issue, be sure to comment! I will see what I can do!
As usual, I have also included the Blender file in case you want to edit it further.
