Summary

This is a complete 3D printable alto trombone pitched in F. I designed this trombone to be able to disassemble for tight packing and to still have connections that did not lose air while playing. This means that it’s a bit of a puzzle to put together but the full trombone should fit into a small bag about the size of the largest component (the 13 cm bell). It is also designed to have minimal post printing operations performed, with only two gluing and one sanding operation really necessary. All components can be printed on a 3D printer with a bed height of at least 39 cm with a total print time of 30-40 hours. The material that I used was PETG plastic.

Each component printing is pretty straight forward and is design to print without any supports, rafts, or brims (at least on the printer that I was using). The taller components can get a little inaccurate towards the top of the print so for the slide components (slide_inner and slide_outer) I have included those parts fused together (slide_inner_double and slide_outer_double) to make for more accurate printing. Printing the slide components in double will make the upper portion of the print much more accurate.

Although tuning_slide component has the word “tuning” in it, it is not actually adjustable. Also, I did not design a new trombone mouthpiece as the trombone itself is designed to use a standard tenor trombone mouthpiece. There are also plenty of 3D printable mouthpieces on this site that work well.

  • bell: bell side down
  • mouthpiece_connector: larger head side down
  • slide_connector: smaller hole side down
  • slide_curve: small flat plate down
  • slide_inner/slide_inner_double: larger radius down
  • slide_outer/slide_outer_double: small, semicircular tabs down
  • support_bell: flat side down
  • support_mouthpiece: flat side down
  • support_slide_bar: either flat side down
  • tuning_slide: small flat plate down
