Summary

This is a tape spindle retainer for the early Akai reel to reel tape decks that have non-locking spindle hubs. I am using them on my 1710W in the pictures. They originally came with rubber push-on caps that no longer work due to age. This design pushes onto the spindle and holds the tape reel in place so they wont fall off when the deck is used in a vertical position.

You will need an O-ring to slip onto the retainer before you use it. This will help it grip the spindle. I used an O-ring with these dimensions but anything close should work:

  • 7/16" / 11mm outer diameter
  • 5/16" / 8mm inner diameter
  • 1/16" / 1.5mm thickness

How to Print:
Since these have small features, print them very slow with a 0.1 or 0.2mm layer height. I had good success with 10mm/s speed. They dont take long to print even at that speed. Any plastic should work fine but I think a less rigid plastic than PLA would probably be best like ABS, ASA, or PETG. I have printed them with PLA and it works fine though.
