A lot of air conditioners are free standing units that vent the heat from the room to the outside by sticking a hose through an open window.
This isn’t ideal as warm air continues to enter the room through the open window, so the air conditioner needs to cool that, in addition to the air inside the room.
This wastes energy and makes the air conditioner much less effective than it could be.
It made me think that what was needed was a sliding panel that could be attached to the window frame, with a hole cut in it for the hose, to block the window opening as much as possible while the air conditioner was in use.
