UPDATES: 07/20/2024 New components added, read below for details.
A set of hexagonal display boxes originally designed for artistically displaying action figures though also great for other collections as well.
Please do feel free to mix and modify, comment and criticize. I welcome any comments and/or images/makes of what you are doing with this idea and thanks in advance especially for posting any of your "makes".
This set includes:
-BOX0 An open basic hexagonal box with no insert slots
-BOX1 An open basic hexagonal box with inserts for foot-peg stands. This is the basic box for action figures.
-BOX2 A basic closed (backed) box with no insert slots.
-BOXM "Mountable" A mountable box that all other boxes can suspend from a cover plate is printed for this box which slips to the back when mounted used to hide the mounting screws.
-BACK1 The backplate for Box M
-BOXM2 Another mountable box with an extended platform. For use with the larger peg insert.
-BOXGRGU A box with a back and mount for the basic Grogu figure's pod. This replaces the small stand that comes with the figure and gives a better impression of floating.
-BOXP An open box with extended platform and no insert recesses.
-BOXP2 An open box with extended platform with insert recesses. For use with the larger peg insert.
-BOXP500 A box with a round platform scaled to fit the Darth Vader 500th figure with it's "meditation chamber."
-BOXPD A mountable box with center support for the Probe Droid which is sold as a set with Darth Vader. This box prints with a peg that is then glued to the center support before placing the Probe Droid figure.
-BOXH For printing two halves of a box at a time that tie together at the ends
-BOXH3 For printing three thirds of a box at a time that tie together at the ends. This and the last box are for printing on smaller printers or coming up with alternate shapes.
-BACKPD The back-plate with center hole cutout for BOXPD
-BACK0 A notchless backplate
-BOXSB A Box with mounts that suit the Star Wars 3.75" character Speeder Bike. The forward gun clips into the rounded-end support and the bike chassis sets on the twisted square support giving the bike an angled placement. This box is shallower due to the shape of the bike.
-BOXTF A box with a support for the Star Wars Tie-Fighter vehicles. Fits both types that I own, not sure about all. I recommend printing this box at 100% infill for sure support.
-BOXH A box made of two reciprocally symmetrical parts. For smaller build-plates.
-BOXH3 A box mode of three identical parts. For smaller build-plates.
-BOXZ Variations. A new spherical hex-box form. Experimental.
-INSERT0 A small platform with holes that is placed in the recesses of boxes that allow for these inserts. Footpegs are placed in the holds of the platform and a character is then placed on the peg so that it holds the character in place via the holes in the feet of most figures.
-INSERT1 A larger platform like INSERT0 for boxes with platforms having larger recesses.
-INSERTL An insert for use with LEGO® components.
-FOOTPEGS The small pegs that couple the figures to INSERT0. I have noticed that the holes in the feet of the figures are in now way consistent and some adjustments may need to be made on occasion. In particular the early figures have much larger holes than most of the modern ones and some newer figures have much more shallow holes requiring the clipping of the tip of the peg for good placement.
-PLATFORM0 A hanging platform for die-cast models etc.
-PLATFORM1 A stand-alone platform that can be slipped into the edge of the upper edge of a hex-box in stead of connecting another hex-box above it.
-PLATFORM2 A stand-alone platform like PLATFORM1 only shorter and with a sloped leading edge.
-EDGEF A single edge component with female slots.
-EDGEM A single edge component with male pegs.
-EDGEN A single edge component with no male or female components, just a flat edge. This and the last two components are for creating variations built with only 1 box side at a time and/or to use as perimeter components to give a more finish look to your diorama.
Each hex-box can be locked to an adjoining one with a hexagonal "dovetail" style connecting system. Many non-mountable boxes can be attached to each wall-mounted box so that there is no need to secure every box to your wall. The included photos should give ample examples of how the boxes can be arranged. As you can see from the photos I have used a wall mounted box every so often in the arrangement. No doubt they could have been spaced out even more than this.
Of course you could use lots of color arrangements as well.
I have printed my boxes on a Creality Ender 5+ "large scale" printer so I do not know the typical printing platform size of most other printers. These boxes are generally 185mm x 167mm x 40mm. I have printed these boxes with infills ranging from 0% to 100% and all work fine with no need of supports or rafting. Gap tolerances have been adjusted so that each box fits nicely together with no resistance (as long as they are straightly connected) while being tight enough to hang one from another without additional supports (other than the initial mounting box), of course this assumes that you are printing your boxes at a "standard quality "setting of .2mm (other settings may result in the back-plate and other inserts not fitting as tightly as intended.
Fun stuff for all of you collectors out there who would like a crafty way of displaying your (loose) collection. Enjoy.
UPDATE: "Notch-less" Backplate 0 (BACK0) uploaded by request.
UPDATE 09/4/2023: I've added a hex box "1/2" (called BOXH) upon request. This can be printed twice and connected by rotating 180 deg in X and Y axis for a complete box. Another type (BOXH3) has also been added though this one requires 3 of the same part to be printed to complete an entire hexbox. The idea was that this may be easier to print on smaller printers or that these can be scaled up and printed larger for displaying larger figures. I've tested this 3 part print at current scale and it actually puzzles together well even at regular size.
UPDATE 09/18/23: ("Z" Variations) I have created a new variation of these original hex-boxes with a spherical curvature along the top faces for a newer look. Boxes of this variation include Plain, W/Insert, Mountable, W/Shelf and W/Shelf+Overhang as well as the necessary inserts and back-plate for these.. This new box-form is completely compatible with the original hex-boxes. If BoxZ1 is printed hollow (0% infill) with 1mm wall, floor and ceiling thicknesses this box requires 7 hours to print and uses 72g/24.15m of filament.
NOW BY POPULAR DEMAND: I have added an insert for LEGO® characters/parts that fits the standard hex-boxes. It is called INSERTL. Now you can use this set to display your builds and collections. More fun for everyone :) Enjoy.
NEW COMPONENTS: I've been asked to add 3 new components which are single hex-box sides, EDGEF (Female Edge), EDGEM (Male Edge) and EDGEN (Neuter Edge/Flat Edge). Now complete boxes, partial boxes, etc can be assembled one edge at a time. EDGEN can be used to trim the edges of the boxes for a cleaner look around the perimeter of your wall art. Enjoy.
TIPS: Feel free to extrude the surface face of different boxes to different depths and such to create variations in your diorama. Think of other ways that the system can be altered for different effects.
NOTE: I have removed the Tie-Fighter mount from this set because I did have both crash to the ground the same day of each-other after nearly 2 years mounted on the wall, there does seem to be some very slow sagging of the ring component. If you've printed this early part and have a tie-fighter mounted on your wall please remove it and discard the mount, I will attempt a better mount for the Tie-Fighters in the future.
