Summary

To supplement my full size 3D printed 16 inch battleship shell - here's a full size 16 inch Full Charge Powder Bag, printed for the Battleship New Jersey Museum. The bag is 16 inches in diameter and 19 inches in overall length. When used to launch the 1225 kg / 2700 lb Mark 8 APCBC Shell, this Full Charge Powder Bag would be filled with 50 kg / 110 lb of D839 propellant - which consisted of solid cylindrical "sticks" of propellant, 5 cm long and 2.5 cm in diameter. In total, 6 bags of propellant would be used to launch one shell, at a muzzle velocity of 760 m/s, and a nominal chamber pressure of 370 MPa.

This full scale replica was once again printed on my Creality CR-M4 large format printer, using the large 1.0 mm nozzle, and 0.5 mm layers. It was split into three sections - the red Ignition Pad (which would be filled with 360 grams of loose black powder in a real powder bag), the main body, and the end piece opposite the Ignition Pad - all of which were designed to screw together, just like the battleship shell. The print used a total of 6.63 kg of filament, and took 6 days and 17.5 hours of continuous print time to complete.
