For wooden train tracks like Thomas/Brio/etc, this splits/joins so that the tracks can run parallel to each other. With two sets, it's a good way to let trains pass each other (for instance, when an older sibling moves their trains along faster). Reversing the curve pieces also sets up an easy way to create a circular loop so that trains can come back around onto the same track in the other direction. Since it comes in three parts, it's also easier on the 3D printer (as separate jobs), but an .stl of the combined track is also included.
