This is a housing to allow the factory "deck light" in a 1st gen Toyota 4Runner to be surface mounted instead of inset into the plastic bed side panel. This allows it to be moved from behind the roll bar and moved up higher for better functionality. This was mainly done to facilitate making plywood bed side panels to replace the ~40 year old brittle plastic side panels. The factory cutout would be hard to do in plywood and the cutout also prevents placing the deck light in front of bed side sheet metal up higher.

I did add a pair of wires, soldered to the deck light bulb, that run out the back of the housing and up to an overhead LED light in the back of the 4Runner. This is optional. I've also rewired the deck light so that it can operate with the vehicle lights off and instead work off ACC power or direct battery power.
